Temo: See prison doctor first

IN the past, remandees have sought orders from the courts to visit the Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWMH) for medical examination and once there, they would escape.
This was revealed by Justice Salesi Temo at the High Court in Suva yesterday after the defence lawyer of a man charged with one count of aggravated robbery sought an order from the court for his client to visit the CWM Hospital to have a medical examination.
The accused informed the court that he was allegedly assaulted by prison officers earlier this week.
Justice Temo said the accused, Malakai Selebula, should first see the prison doctor at the Suva Remand Centre and the decision on whether he should be seen at the CWM Hospital or not depended on the doctor.
State lawyer Eoghan Samisoni sought time to finalise proposed agreed facts.
Justice Temo instructed the prison doctor to prepare a medical report of the accused and for it to be made available on August 30.
He said if the report was not finalised, then the doctor was to be present in court to give advice on the issue.
