Teacher unions: ‘Guideline creating confusion’

The two teacher unions said it was imperative for Education Minister Premila Kumar to clarify her statement on the reopening of schools.

Ms Kumar had said earlier that there was no “no jab, no school” policy.

She had said that all students would be welcomed back to school, even if they opted not to get vaccinated.

However, the Safe School Reopening Guidelines said anyone above the age of 15 years had to be fully vaccinated before they could enter any school premises.

Fijian Teachers Association general secretary Paula Manumanunitoga said Ms Kumar’s statement contradicted the guideline. He said the minister was quoted last week as saying that Fijians would need to learn to live with the virus.

Fiji Teachers Union general secretary Agni Deo Singh said the statement that was shared earlier by Ms Kumar was confusing the heads of schools.

He said the ministry had said that all students would be welcomed back to school – vaccinated or otherwise – and vaccination requirement in the guideline was creating confusion.

Mr Singh said the ministry must rectify the issue before classes resumed on November 1 for Year 12 and 13 students.
