Suva proved too strong yesterday beating points leaders Lautoka 2-1 during their Digicel Premier League clash, to hold on to second place at the ANZ Stadium yesterday.

It was a Merrill Nand spectacular with the centre forward scoring a double.

“He was showing us something different during training and we decided to move on that,” coach Maxwell Thaggard said.

“We worked on something a little bit different and Merrill delivered as he always does.

“He played his role perfectly and has always been a performer and I’m sure that is not the last we’ll see of him.”

While spectators were still taking their seats, Unique Rubber Stamps Suva had taken the lead. It took Nand 45 seconds to score and utilise a through ball from Shahil Dave to send a bewildered Benaminio Mateinaqara scrambling, surprised and grabbing thin air.

Nand replicated almost the same move on the 37th minute, this time off a clever pass from veteran and captain Christopher Wasasala with the same result sending the Capital City side 2-0 up at the break. Lautoka fought hard to change their fate, but to no avail.

Lautoka midfielder Wilson Duduke scored a consolation goal minutes to full time. Lautoka remain top of the table with 23 points with Suva in second on 19 points.
