AN initiative by medical students from the University of Fiji’s Saweni campus resulted in a water project commissioned at a Ba settlement this week.

Residents of Dogusu settlement in the Ba highlands used to access water from contaminated sources until year 6 students from Umanand Prasad School of Medicine visited the area.

“During our initial visit to Dogusu settlement, we found that there was unsafe drinking water available for the community and we then worked with the relevant authorities to address the issue and this is the result of our continued effort to provide safe drinking water to the people,” said team leader Sumeet Pratap.

He said having access to clean and safe water was a basic need and this would reduce the risk of water borne communicable diseases.

Health Minister Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete, who commissioned the project, acknowledged the efforts of the UPSM medical students.

“Government’s vision remains the same in providing basic amenities such as water to the remote and disadvantaged communities and we will work very closely with the communities in improving the lives of the people,” he said.
