“NO one tells us what to do, the Board tells what to do and not the Government”

These were the words of Fiji Broadcasting Corporation chief executive officer Riyaz Sayed-Khaiyum when questioned before the Parliament Standing Committee on Justice, Law and Human Rights in Suva this morning.

He was making submissions on the Public Enterprise Bill 2019.

Committee’s chairman Alvick Maharaj requested that a clarification was done on speculations that FBC was controlled by Government.
In response, Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said all decisions were made by the board.
He said Government would be responsible for the check and balances such as if the entity was performing or financial reports were submitted on time.
Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said they would consult the board if there was a need to carry out any project.

“The revenue of FBC is based on advertising so that is where we get out money from unlike the past when it was fully funded by Government,” he said.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said they are currently operating on a competitive environment.
