Fijiana XV coach Senirusi Seruvakula said pressure was now on our local players to work hard for a spot in the Rugby World Cup squad with overseas players willing to turn down contracts to climb aboard on Fiji’s maiden voyage to the 2021 Women’s Rugby World Cup.

Seruvakula said his phone had been ringing off the hook with numerous overseas players coming forward willing to be part of history.

“It is good for the Fijiana, but at the same time the note for our local girls is to step up because a lot of overseas players want that spot,” Seruvakula said.

“A lot of players are gaining interest such as in England and those playing Super Rugby in Australia and I have been getting calls.

Seruvakula said on the nature of some of the calls received, numerous unnamed overseas players were willing to make career changing decisions for a shot at representing Fiji at the rugby world cup.

“A lot of these players are very interested in turning down these professional contracts and other countries to play for Fiji and be among the first Fijiana team going into the World Cup.”

Seruvakula said he would select his local squad this month with the overseas- based players expected to join in July.
