A 25-YEAR-OLD man from Caubati, Nasinu, is in police custody for allegedly breaking into a house belonging to a 55-year-old woman near the Malake Landing in Rakiraki on Monday morning.
According to Police, efforts by villagers from Malake Island led to the arrest.
The accused allegedly stole a vehicle from Nawanawa in Nadera on Sunday night, and on Monday morning he was involved in an accident near Malake Landing.
Police added he allegedly ran away from the scene of the accident where his car had veered off the road, and later broke into the victim’s house in the area and allegedly stole assorted items.
The victim raised the alarm and some men from Malake Island who were near the landing chased after the suspect into a sugar cane field when Police officers who were conducting community visitations nearby arrived.
The suspect was arrested by the men after a search through the cane fields. All items alleged to have been stolen were recovered.
The accused has been charged with burglary and theft and was expected to be produced at the Rakiraki Magistrates Court today.
