Lakena bus accident: Private car driver remanded; bus driver allegedly assaulted

A BUS driver who was involved in an accident that claimed the lives of two  students at Lakena outside Nausori has  been further remanded into custody.

The bus driver, Shalen Jattan is charged with two counts of dangerous driving occasioning death, two counts of dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm and one count of dangerous driving.

Mr Jattan appeared before Magistrate Shageeth Somaratne at the Nausori Magistrates Court  today for his bail hearing.

His lawyer, Shomal Kant  also informed the court that her client was allegedly assaulted by  other remandees while he was in police custody.

Magistrate Somaratne said that they must first file a police complaint at the Nausori Police Station regarding the alleged assault incident.

He said he would deliver his ruling tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the driver of the private car who was also involved in the accident has been advised to file a proper bail application.

Eremali Tikomailautoka also opted for Legal Aid assistance.

He is charged with two counts of dangerous driving occasioning death, two counts of dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm and one count of dangerous driving.

The alleged incident took place last week Wednesday.

He will reappear in court on Friday.
