SENIOR Health Ministry officials and medical officers have been urged to improve visibility on the ground.

This was the message from newly appointed Health and Medical Services Minister, Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete.

He said with the recent salary increase for doctors and nurses, the number of medical professionals had increased but the challenge was to increase the quality of medical care to all Fijians.

“Now that we’re getting the quantity sorted, we are working on the quality by making sure we have continuing professional development programs and making sure that we, senior leaders, are actually visiting our team.

“And this is not us checking on people but just making them realise that they are accountable.

“So instead of being holed up in medical headquarters, we are actually visiting on a regular basis.

“And that is something that the assistant minister, permanent secretary and I have discussed that we need to be more visible on the ground.

“And that is something that I have suggested to all our senior leaders, they have to be more visible.

“The message is you have got to be visible and travelling right throughout the breadth of your division and talking to the staff.”
