‘Hold the Coalition accountable’

Hold the Coalition Government accountable to promises made during the election campaign, in particular, promises made to increase civil service pay.
This was highlighted by Fiji Labour Party leader and former Fiji Public Service Association (FPSA) general secretary Mahendra Chaudhry.
Speaking at the FPSA annual general meeting, he said FPSA’s log of claims lodged in December, 2019, had been “see-sawing” in a maze of bureaucratic manoeuvres in the past three years.
“You must recognise that you will be negotiating against a backdrop of severe financial constraints faced by the new Government,” he said.
“But as a trade union, your first duty is to your members. You are facing serious challenges and lagging behind as per your claims, et cetera. You must hold the government to its election promises.
“The Coalition is now realising that promises made glibly during the election campaign may be difficult to meet. Since taking office, they are talking of constraints in meeting these promises.
“The buzzword now is fiscal consolidation.” At present, FPSA has over 2000 members. |
