BOOK the dates January 16-19 next year for a time to sit back at the Lawaqa Park stadium and enjoy the rugby feast in the coming McDonald’s Coral Coast 7s tournament.

The tournament will have 32 teams – 16 men’s and youths and 10 women’s teams.

And it will include one of the world’s best rugby wingers Bryan Gary Habana of the Springboks as the tournament ambassador, and top World Rugby 7s referee Fhatuwani ‘Rasta’ Rasivhenge.

New major sponsor McDonald’s today handed tournament director Jay Whyte a $50,000 cheque.

“McDonald’s is the major sponsor,” Whyte said.

“We welcome them for the first time. We will have 32 teams which includes the Australian men’s development team and the Hong Kong men’s and women’s teams. We are talking to Gordon Tietjens for a possible Samoa development side.”

McDonald’s people development manager Verenaisi Wong said the sponsorship was to help promote and enhance rugby in Fiji through the tournament.

“We are excited to be part of the tournament because it is a way of developing rugby in Fiji,” she said.

Police is the men’s defending champion after beating First Light Taveuni 34-7 in January while Striders hold the women’s crown after beating Hong Kong 19-12.
